Film: The Cellar, Dinners in Marylebone and Greenwich, The Second Chaucer Walk, & Play: The Idiot

Right! Firstly, I forgot to mention the film I saw on tv over the weekend - which, as I watched, I remembered I'd seen before. But I didn't remember a thing about it in advance, and it certainly merited a re-watch. The Cellar , a Shudder co-production, is an Irish horror film, released a few years ago now, about a woman whose daughter goes missing after they move into a big old remote house, and who is very suspicious about strange things related to the house - particularly centred on the cellar, of course. Now, its rating isn't great, and true, the first part of the film is woefully amateurish, from a horror perspective - jump scares, predictable.. BUT. It's based on a rather excellent short film on YouTube , called The Ten Steps , written and directed by the same writer/director of the longer film, Brendan Muldowney . The premise is fantastically simple - a young girl, terrified of the cellar, is forced to face her fear when the power goes when her parents are out, a...

Dinner at the Greenwich Yacht Club

Tonight, back at last with  Over 40 Living the Life , for dinner at the  Greenwich Yacht Club . They've had a few of these lately, but they've always clashed with something. So, I headed out - it always takes too long to go by bus, so Tube it is. And then bus, to hasten the arrival time - it's only one stop from the station , and pretty much any bus will do. I basically remembered the last bit, which I had to walk - tell you though, it was unnerving, crossing the bridge for the first time in ages ! It wasn't hard to spot them - I got my drink sorted, and then we ordered.. there seems to have been a run on fish (which yes, I know is good), but happily, I wanted a burger anyway. Interestingly, a few people at the table just had soup - but they don't provide spoons in the trays of cutlery and condiments that are considerately left out.. they had to be reminded that soup isn't eaten with a fork.. Anyway, I found the burger lovely, and the presalted chips lovely. Ex...

Dinner, The Greenwich Walk (London Literary Walks), & Film: The Commandant's Shadow

Image
Last Tuesday, back - first time in  a while  - with  Over 40 Living the Life , for a dinner in the  Greenwich Yacht Club . Always good - and although it rained, I missed the worst - it was certainly torrential just after I got home. Five of us had a most convivial evening - this time, I had the roast beef, which I haven't had for ages (and never here), and which was on as a special. Very good. As was the price - much wine was imbibed, and I met a few (very nice) new people. I passed on taking photos, I've taken so many here - but if you click on the Greenwich Yacht Club label at the end of the post, you'll get a list of posts filtered by that label and can check. I was too tired that night to blog.. and typically, too busy to blog during work the following day. On Wednesday evening, in  Greenwich  again - I should nearly have stayed the night! This time, I was back with  London Literary Walks  (LLW) for  The Greenwich Walk . We were meeting i...

Dinner: Greenwich Yacht Club

Image
Tonight, another dinner at  Greenwich Yacht Club  with  Over 40 Living the Life . Third Tuesday in a row - but the last time for a while they'd be doing it. So, I worked a bit late.. our organiser was there a bit early, which meant she was messaging us to say she was already there - when I hadn't yet left! Yikes.. Never mind, I did get there at the appointed time. Brr, it's cold though! As we all remarked to each other, where did the warmer weather go?! The wind, as I was walking to the Tube , as I was walking to the club, was bitter. I was so glad to get inside.. mind you, we had one member putting on her coat - it wasn't so very warm inside either.. I decided sod it, and I got the bottle - knew I'd drink it. (And you do save 50p.) For my food, I went back to the burger, which I knew, from previous experience , to be good. And it was.. although I had to search for the sneaky slice of tomato, hiding in the bottom, and which I can't eat.. Otherwise, very tasty. C...

Dinner: Greenwich Yacht Club

Image
Tonight, back with  Over 40 Living the Life  for another dinner at  Greenwich Yacht Club .. and after  last Tuesday , I knew what not to order! I'm getting better at finding my way - once I was within sight, I knew exactly where I was going, for once. I was among the first to arrive - and I needn't have worried, the curry was off the menu tonight! Steak.. chicken.. burger.. fish.. I decided on steak. Happily, someone in the group wanted to share a bottle of wine, which is always nice.. mind you, calculating, we saved 50p by buying the bottle. Oh, and the steak is £10. Really cannot beat the value here.. I did ask for medium, but I think it all comes the same way, by the look of it. Mine was what you might call well done. Anyway, it wasn't - hand on heart - the best I've had. But it was nice, tasty - lovely gravy - and a huge portion. Comes with chips. After, I wanted the chocolate and orange sponge again, but they were out of it - a guy at the bar recommended the (ve...

Play: The Comeuppance & Dinner: Greenwich Yacht Club

Image
On Monday, I was back with  North London Friends  - they had tickets for  The Comeuppance , at  The Almeida , and I got the last of theirs. It sold out for that day, although there were returns. Getting there was entertaining - turned out no buses were running on that stretch because of water works! Ended up walking to London Bridge to catch the Northern Line - the only way I'd get there in reasonable time to eat! (and isn't it a good thing the Tube strike for that day was cancelled..) For dinner, back to The Bull , of course.. having had the fish n chips the day before , I decided to mix it up and go for the chicken schnitzel this time! Ah, I tell you, if I lived around there, I'd eat here all the time - it was gorgeous! Served with a half lemon, rather unusually, like the fish.. I tried it, and yes, a lovely combination! The chips were a little too salty, but overall I really enjoyed it. Lovely wine, too.. and after a hard day's work, running to catch up with my...
