Talk: Ten Years On - Brexit and Britain's Political Future

Image
Now, tonight was supposed to be the third in a  run of three Meetup s, back with London Social & Cultural Meetups (also advertised, again, with the London European Club ) for a talk at the London School of Economics - this one was Ten Years On: Brexit and Britain's Political Future . But wouldn't you know, I was checking this afternoon - and I never registered for the talk! Lordy.. well, there was no doing it now - so I cancelled my attendance at the Meetup and headed for dinner at the Pommeler's Rest before the talk, which I could still access online. The rain held off, and it was a gloriously sunny evening - I got a table just inside the door, where I could watch both the golden sunshine and the manic traffic. Had a nice meal, nice wine.. a second nice wine.. and reflected that one of the good things about not attending in person was that I had time to eat beforehand, rather than spending the better part of an hour just getting there. And I was hungry.. Got hom...

Play: Down to Chance

Image
Tonight, second in a row with CT,  Down to Chance  is a comedy play about the  Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964 , and a local radio operator's role in helping. Showing at the  Pleasance Theatre . I t was just yesterday that I realised I hadn't thought about food - been too busy, I guess! Well, The Depot   pub is right next door, and does food. I emailed them to book. To be fair, they got back to me quickly enough - to say they were booked for a private event. Ho-hum - with a great lack of places to eat around there, I decided to eat around home instead, and made my way to the Pommeler's Rest . Got there nice n early, managed a table not in direct sunlight - it was a very sunny day. Had my usual chicken katsu curry, but was a bit nervous about ordering the wine - Wetherspoon's now makes you choose a spritzer option, but I don't want spritzer. One option is "standard", which I chose - happily, that turns out to be the non-spritzer option. Could be phrased b...

Lecture: British Folk Horror

Image
I was stuck for something to do today, until I remembered something I saw advertised on  Facebook  - there was a  talk about British Folk Horror  tonight! Courtesy of Seed Talks . I was too late to book an in-person ticket, so I booked one for the livestream - tickets from  Eventbrite . Work finished in nice time to get something to eat first - so I schlepped off to my local Wetherspoon's, the Pommeler's Rest ! Damn cold out, too. Got a table without issue - except that it was a bit snug, and if I moved the table back enough so I could squeeze in without having to push the chair in the way of the stairs, then the gap between my table and the adjacent one would be challenging for anyone to squeeze through.. And I was in line with the door. Which wasn't actually a problem, I was far enough from it - just as well, considering the number of people who left it open.. Had my usual katsu, which was lovely, even the third day in a row - might have been my imagina...

Book Launch: The Devil in the 19th Century & Film: Dead to Rights

Image
Last night - couldn't find anything really appealing in person, but  Watkin's , which I hadn't been at an event with in  years , had a free online discussion about  The Devil in the 19th Century , the  book  discussing a publication that was a hoax, designed to convince the  Catholic Church  that there was a secret society of Satanists. Now, I was supposed to be in the office - but with the strike , we were let work from home for the week. So that was handy. Hell, the night before, I felt the benefits of a late start, with not having to go to bed as early! Signed off my work computer, and booted up my personal one, about five minutes before start time - which was just as well, as it turned out I needed to install Zoom ! Which took forever.. so even at that, I was late: but just for the introduction. The speaker, Aurélie Dekoninck , was remote - somewhere - and we saw her on screen after the intro. Ah my, what a tale of derring-do was spun by the author...
