Dance: ROOH - Within Her

Unfortunately, it's been such a busy week, I only finished my film list last night- and had been thinking of going to a film today, which made it a bit urgent. I needed to see what was on, first.. and then what else might be on offer in Meetup. And so it came to pass that the most interesting offering seemed to be with Up in the Cheap Seats (UITCS), who were advertising ROOH: Within Her, a contemporary dance celebrating the heroism of women through the ages. Showing in the Lilian Baylis Studio. So I booked. Couldn't remember where was good to eat there, then I saw it on the map - and booked a table at The Wilmington as well.

Sadly, the organiser- the only other one going, from the group- had to cry off, not feeling well. But I went anyway- at the pub, had a very tasty starter of Irish soda bread, of all things! Also sadly, the flat iron steak they do so well here was sold out, so I had sirloin.. which was excellent. As were the truffles.. the waiter warned me it was a tiny portion, but as I explained, my aim was to maximise the chocolate hit..!

And so off to the studio, where the stage was in darkness:

The performance, again, only lasted about an hour - helpfully, a narrative (which started after the first dance) explained what we were watching. So, from a woman searching for her dead son on the battlefield, to a woman who chased a lion away from the herd she was guarding, to a group of villagers who acted as human shields to stop the local trees being felled. Throughout, the story was beautifully interpreted by the lone dancer, to the powerful and haunting accompaniment of live Indian music. A lovely piece, which attracted a standing ovation.

Tomorrow, back with Laurence Summers and the 45+ Not Grumpies! This walk is From Muck to Money.

On Sunday, our monthly ex-colleagues meeting.. this time, just Ivan and James, and we're trying The Phoenix, which we thought of before but didn't go for.

On Monday, back for the first time in ages with TAC, for a talk on A History of Britain in 10 Enemies, at The Conduit

On Tuesday, back with The Hideout.. Until Dawn does sound appealing, particularly with the time loop feature. Details TBC, though.

On Wednesday, back with the much-neglected London Literary Walks (LLW)! Well, if he will hold walks on a Wednesday.. This one is The Westminster Walk, meeting in St. Stephen's Tavern

On Thursday, thinking of heading with UITCS again, for Tambo & Bones, at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. Still waiting to hear on whether the member with a spare ticket still has it, mind.. then off to Ireland for the bank holiday weekend.

On the 6th, back - after too long - with North London Friends! We're headed to House of Games, in Hampstead Theatre. And what a tragedy it is that Ye Olde Swiss Cottage seems to have closed..! It was my go-to, there, and they served excellent food..

On the 7th, back with LLW for the 101 Dalmatians walk! We're meeting in The Globe - I've booked to eat there beforehand.

On the 8th.. flamenco!! Which I love. Found a group, Flamenco Events in London, and have requested to join - anyway, have booked for this concert in St. John's Church Hoxton. Tickets from Eventbrite - free after-show party, but I'm passing- have work next day, of course. Have booked with Schnitzel Heaven for beforehand.

On the 9th, back in this area (the main Sadler's Wells Theatre this time) with UITCS again, for Oona Doherty-Specky Clark. Which sounds.. curious, being an interpretation in dance of a family history involving a family of butchers and, on the other side, working in an abattoir..

On the 10th, back with Laurence and the 45+s.. this time, for The Wallace Collection. And Helen is coming to town! And on the walk, natch.

I'm leaving the 11th free in case the aforementioned ex-colleagues can come to a consensus to meet that day!

And on the 12th, heading with my companion from the Swiss trip to a classical concert in St. John's Waterloo - also booked with Eventbrite. We're eating at The Archduke beforehand.
