Film: We Live in Time
Today was We Live in Time, again in the Odeon Limerick, a decade-spanning romance between Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. I saw him interviewed about it on Graham Norton, so felt mildly obliged to see it - and anyway, I didn't have much else to do! Niamh Cusack has a cameo as her mother - honestly though, I had to look up which Cusack it was, they are so alike!
I don't tend to go for romances - but he was right, in his interview, when he said this isn't a conventional love story. Honestly, it isn't a bit twee - they're great together, there are more comical moments than anything else: and, crucially, the story is mostly told through events that happen in their lives, rather than major introspective scenes where they examine their feelings. Nah, there's a teeny bit of that. But mainly, it's about them navigating life, as it happens to them.
And gosh, it does - although I won't give any spoilers. But what happens to them isn't anything OTT really - perhaps slightly more dramatic than most of us will experience in our lifetimes, but nothing that makes it look obviously unreal. You can believe this story. There are a lot of back-and-forth time switches, but you get used to it after a while. And aww, Andrew Garfield has these puppy-dog eyes.. and they're such lovely people, you just want good to happen to them. And yes, it is a tearjerker.. and, of course, there isn't anything wrong with that.
Delighted I saw it - as the man said, it isn't a conventional romance. Highly recommended.
And that's it for outings until after I fly back to the Big Smoke on Sunday.. on Monday and Tuesday, I'm thinking film - and now that the listings are sort of out, for Monday I'm thinking Her Story, a decent-looking comedy. Showing in the Odeon Luxe Haymarket - early enough though, so it'll depend on me getting there fast enough after work!
And on Tuesday, I've booked for The Bibi Files - a documentary about the corruption case against Netanyahu, and showing in the Curzon Bloomsbury. Another of my free tickets, yay!
On Wednesday, back with Movie Roadhouse London / The Hideout for their New Year's Social! In the BFI Riverfront Bar as usual - now, someone said there's a good food pub around the area somewhere; I don't remember where, but I've booked The Mulberry Bush, and we shall see!
And next Thursday, I'm back with CT for a play called 10 Nights, at Riverside Studios.
