Film: Sing Sing

TonightI went with the film list: was very interested in seeing what was top of the list- Sing Sing, based on the true story of an arts program that started in the infamous prison, and has now spread to others. Showing in the Curzon Bloomsbury

It was at an in-between time - I could have eaten beforehand, but it would have been a little early. So I stayed late at work instead - I certainly had enough work to do - and ended up just making it in time. Got some of their moreish chocolate honeycomb bites to tide me over. Arrived during the ads.

Now, this is an excellent film! With a couple of professional actors, most of the cast are actually former inmates, and alumni of the program! And you wouldn't guess that they're amateurs from the performances - they're terrific. It's gripping throughout - both from the perspective of the inmates' individual, moving stories, and also taking us through the nuts and bolts process of creating a play - and with the most basic of props! It's a wonderful idea, really giving them something worthwhile to get their teeth into. And now a film, to boot! And it's filmed in the prison, which is apparently filled with natural light, streaming through the windows.. as someone pointed out, imagine being able to look out at the world every day, but unable to touch it. We get some footage of what look like real-life prison productions at the end - kudos to everyone involved.

Ate afterwards, at GBK, of course - have to say, the onion rings weren't as nice as last night's, and are repeating on me a bit. And they were a little stingy on the sauce on the burger. But it was fine. And I could shop after that, too - such a handy place to go to the cinema!

Tomorrow, I was supposed to be back with London Literary Walks for Ian Fleming, Winston Churchill, Isadora Duncan. Meeting in the Bag o' Nails pub beforehand- and wouldn't you know it, it's another Greene King! So I booked to eat there beforehand. But today, he checked the weather forecast - and discovering that it was supposed to lash rain, he's postponed it - to a day I can't go! Ah well - so I've cancelled that dinner as well. Instead, I'm headed with TAC to the opening night of Silence! The Musical! a parody of The Silence of the Lambs, of all things! Well now, I could hardly resist.. especially since there's a chorus of, eh, lambs. Showing at The Turbine - and I've booked Cinnamon Kitchen, next door, for dinner. Where I probably won't have lamb..

And on Thursday, we have a pre-trip Zoom meeting for our trip to Transylvania! Just finally got my holiday approved by work last week - my boss was probably prompted by the head of HR, trying to chase everyone to book their holidays by year's end! Anyway, booked my local Côte for dinner that evening.
