Burlesque: Fool's Moon

Tonight, another new group - London Circus Cabaret and Burlesque Meetup was headed to Fool's Moon, a drag circus act at Soho Theatre. Meeting beforehand at the Nellie Dean - aw man, it's ages since I was at these places! Several signed up in the end..

I could walk to this one! (For now - I'll surely miss living in this area.) I ate enroute in Pret, to save time - didn't feel like anything major anyway. Now, this was a proper Meetup. The organiser was good enough to post a current photo, so there was no real problem in locating him. In the end, only a few of us met in the pub - what the hey, we had a very entertaining time. Turns out the organiser kind of has a background in circus - now, I can't think of better credentials for hosting such a group! And we had a nice chat before moving across to the theatre - where we got drinks and stood outside. Hell, it was nicer, in the balmy evening weather! And there, we met a fourth member.

When it came time, we went in - the show was in the Downstairs space. We were all sat separately - I was second row from the stage, on one side. Perhaps not a bad idea not to be in the front, what with audience participation - although, to be fair, they didn't force anyone..

Ah my. This was a show that kind of defies description. :-) You know how cabaret is supposed to be decadent? (This kind of came up in the pub discussion earlier.) Well, this was then a very definite cabaret.. yes, naughty. Yes, not something to take your mother to. Yes, alcohol helped. You know what else? There was some real talent here - the Indian dancer, in particular, actually showed a real talent for belly dancing - something I've seen in its authentic setting. Overall, highly entertaining - and hey, they played Blinded by the Light - well, they had me at that point; I love it. The whole show was kind of audacious - and all the better for it. More, please! This is something that Meetup has been missing - I hope the group keeps going.

Afterwards, a nightcap, and off we went. Lovely to meet these people!

Tomorrow, London Baroque Music Lovers again showed an unerring instinct for hitting a day I didn't have anything booked! So I'm going with them to a concert (& social) called Handel: Abandonment Issues, at the Foundling Museum. Tickets from Eventbrite, with a discount for people booking through the group!

On Friday - the advantage of unemployment, I can go on weekday walks with Laurence Summers and the 45+ Not Grumpy Old Londoners! This one, he can't do on weekends anyway - it's The Labyrinth of the Law Courts Walking Tour, and - predictably - full up.

That evening, off with my Up in the Cheap Seats (UITCS) companion to Prom 9: Mariza Sings Fado, at the Albert Hall. We're eating beforehand at the Elgar Room, in the Albert Hall - a first for me, so should be interesting!

The weekend is all about walking. On Saturday, back with London Herstory Guided WalksMandy taking us on a walk entitled Bow Belles! A Guided Walk through Bow Quarter.

On Monday, it's likely to be film - but what precisely is a matter of conjecture. A couple of big releases are not yet rated. Failing those, what is coming up is Squaring the Circle, a documentary about Hipgnosis, which handled the artwork for many iconic albums.. Can't say I've ever heard of them, but it sure does have famous contributors! Showing in the Curzon Bloomsbury - so not a hardship.

On Tuesday, booked with TAC to see The Pioneers in The Forge. Last I heard, it was closing down - I guess it's under new management.

Next Wednesday, with UITCS for an opera at the Arcola, as part of Grimeborn - this is No for an Answer.

On the 27th, again allowing for unrated releases, as it's looking like film - what's coming up is a documentary, again in the Curzon Bloomsbury, called Iraq's Invisible Beauty. And then I'm back to Ireland for the weekend again.
