Musical: Play On

Tonight, back with Over 40 Living the Life - first time this year - for Play On, a musical at the Lyric Hammersmith. Re-imagines Twelfth Night - in the Cotton Club! Buddies on Budgets in London is off to it next week, but what can you do..?

I was in the office today, which made it slightly quicker to get to than it otherwise would have been. (Speaking of which, happy to report that the #188 came promptly this morning, for me to get to work - funnily enough, I was heading for the bus stop on one side when I saw a bus pulling away from it, and just in case, I made a dash for the stop on the other side, which is the next on the #188 route. And thus I made the #188 earlier than I otherwise would've! The journey was greatly enlivened by the small child next to me, who demanded to know what was in the container at the front. "Just newspapers", said mum. That child would not rest until mum pulled one out, whereupon child cheered excitedly. Would that we were all so excited by the news..)

I headed off from the office pretty early, figuring I could grab a table in the bar - which I did. This had other advantages - the Piccadilly Line wasn't crowded at all.. and wow, the horror stories I heard afterwards about people trying to get there by Tube! Apparently there were people on the line - I heard stories of the gates being closed at Liverpool Street. As it was, our poor organiser was severely delayed, missing the start of the show. So, just as well I beat all that by going early..

I ate in Wasabi, as usual out here - and boy, was it good. Not to mention cheaper than the lunch I had at Pret - with the advantage of hot food and a larger portion. To be fair, I didn't have chocolate at Wasabi, as I do at Pret - Wasabi doesn't do anything I fancy.

Off to the theatre then, grabbed a seat in the bar, went to the loo - half the cubicles were out of order - got a drink, noting where the lifts were round the back: the one at the front wasn't working, and I was lugging my laptop bag. I messaged in case anybody was around, but they weren't, so I just went up when the house was open. And lo, the blasted lifts around the back seemed to be stuck as well! To add insult to injury, after I dragged myself and my bag up to the Upper Circle, where we were sat, the bloke who scanned my ticket tried to tell me the lifts at the back were working. Ooh, I could have hit him with the bag..

I didn't. Instead, I made my way into the auditorium, and up yet more steps to the back, where one of the group was already in situ - the others were delayed, as I say. Well, as we agreed, it was a good view:

I've been so tired, I damn near fell asleep - but managed to stay awake, and wow, what a show! Now, this is more what I would have expected from Titanique, last night - there's still comedy, but it doesn't get in the way of the story. They give a nice nod to the Shakespearian play - about the only element they don't include is the brother. But what they have taken fits together very nicely.

And wow, the singing.. a couple of them practically raised the roof. And wow, the music, the choreography.. Ah man, the first good thing I've seen since Monday, and the best live show this year so far. This is fantastic - very highly recommended. Runs till the 22nd - quick, book!

Tomorrow, I'm back to Ireland for the weekend.. where the film is looking like Blue Road: The Edna O' Brien Story. Now, the writer Edna O' Brien was originally from Clare - and sure enough, it's only showing in Ennis. This documentary has Jessie Buckley reading her journals, and also features Gabriel Byrne.

On Monday, I'm thinking film again - and delighted to see that what's coming up - highest-rated that is showing when I can see it, and that I'm interested in - is Companion. I hadn't much interest in this until I saw the trailer yesterday, and that it was from the makers of the excellent Barbarian.. it actually looks really innocent until you look deeper! "Deliciously wicked" it says in the trailer - and it does look it. Looking forward to it! Curzon Aldgate again.

Then, three Meetups in a row. On Tuesday, back with Up in the Cheap Seats at last - we're headed to The Years, at the Harold Pinter - cheapest tickets from the official venue, as often happens. They're in the Balcony - I don't trust the legroom up there, so I'm in the front row of the Stalls; I'd rather a neck ache than cramped knees! and it's the same price. Another one with no interval, I see - that's really becoming a feature. Booked at Bella Italia Cranbourne Street this time - there's never been a problem with service there, and it's much more relaxed.

On Wednesday, I'm back with the 45+ Not Grumpies for Paul's February Pub Crawl. We're starting at the Lion & Unicorn in Waterloo Station, where we'll also eat, then heading - well, towards home for me, finishing at London Bridge! Very convenient.

And next Thursday, I'm with a new group, 45+ Solos Socializer, for a comedy night at Candlemaker Smok'd, which is a pub with a BBQ menu. Anyway, they do comedy too on Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays, and are offering 30% off bookings for both comedy and food until the 16th. Apparently, the organiser is booking a table for us all - we just have to worry about booking the comedy.
